Kumihimo is a special type of braid that originated in Japan. The look of the braid depends on the materials used and the number of strands used in the braid. The most common one is an 8 cord braid.
This is actually three tutorials for the price of one!
First, I give you instructions for how to do a basic 8 cord Kumihimo. If you have never done Kumihimo before, this is a good place to start. I recommend starting with fiber, such as embroidery floss, yarn, or satin rattail cording. There are many possibilities for endless variations by just varying the type of fiber you use! When you are comfortable with braiding with fiber, then it is time to take it to the next level- Kumihimo with beads!
The second tutorial shows you how to do a Kumihimo braid with beads. Using a thin cord and size 8 beads you can produce a Kumihimo braid that looks a lot like bead crochet. But I don’t stop there!
The third tutorial shows you how to do a braid with graduated colors- Ombre- using different color beads. With a few easy calculations you can select what length you want the braid to be, and control the color gradiation so it is even on both sides of the necklace. I have done the research and crunched the numbers to distill the information into a few simple calculations. This is my own technique, you won't find this information anywhere else! The math is not difficult- if you can multiply and divide with a calculator, then you can do it! I provide a blank worksheet so you just fill in the blanks.
I also provide information on how to finish off your Kumihimo braid and add findings to it. Talk about an abundance of information!
The bundle has a total of 22 pages of instructions and 60 pictures. There is enough information here to keep you entertained for quite some time, whether you are a beginner to Kumihimo or are experienced and looking for something new to do!
You will need a Kumihimo disk with 8 Kumihimo bobbins, and fiber for a practice braid. For the beaded braids you will need size 8 beads, c-lon cord, a big eye needle, a centimeter tape measure, scissors, and a calculator. Depending on the project you are working on there may be a few other supplies, they are all listed in the tutorials.
